Gerade noch rechtzeitig... / Just in time...

Liebe Grüße,

Bianca

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 13 / Holiday Countdown Day 13

Bianca

Only 0 days till Halloween, 25 (27) days till Thanksgiving and 54 days till Christmas

Today we need a piece of paper (or this worksheet if you want to *lol*) and in addition to that the rest of your family (as long as the children are old enough to have a voice in family matters). For today's

Challenge #13:

we'll talk about family-Christmas-traditions!

Which traditions do you all love? I mean traditions like where to spend the holidays, how to decorate the tree, how or when to unwrap the presents, what you'll have for food. Well, you know best what traditions you already have.

But also: Which traditions are not so loved by some family members? And now that you know about this: Do you still want to hold on to these traditions? Or maybe you could try out some other, new traditions instead!

It could be, that you suddenly find out that there are traditions in your family that no one likes!

Talk about it and see what happens...

Do you have any traditions that are special to you and that you could tell us about?

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 12 / Holiday Countdown Day 12

Bianca

Only 1 day till Halloween, 26 (28) days till Thanksgiving and 55 days till Christmas

Oh, I know, today I'm very, very late - and almost too late as it will be Sunday quite soon!

For today's

Challenge #12:

I only have one question: Have you already consulted with your darling about the Christmas budget?
I have to admit, we (my dear husband and I) haven't had a chance to talk about it yet, since we were on a family day trip to the Hessenpark all day long (report and pictures will follow soon).
But we'll catch up on that tomorrow...

I wish you a good night,

Lustige Website / Funny website

Bianca

Thinking about Halloween this weekend I'd like you to check out a website called www.skulladay.blogspot.com by Noah Scalin.

In 2007 Mr. Scalin decided to create a skull a day for a whole year!

You'll find skulls made out of tofu, pumpkins, bedsheets, fall leaves, corks, spaghetti with tomato sauce, onions, paint, color-by-numbers, paper, sugar cubes and, and, and...
By now it's more than 365 skulls.

These skulls are incredible and alot of fun to look at!

Have a great Halloween-Weekend,

Bianca

Feiertags-Coutndown Tag 11 / Holiday Countdown Day 11

Weiß jemand, wo man hier in Deutschland gutes Kürbis-Schnitz-Werkzeug bekommt?
Mal sehen, was Ihr davon haltet.

In der heutigen

Aufgabe 11:

Geschenkpapier, Weihnachtskarten, Briefmarken?

Bianca

Only 2 days till Halloween, 27 (29) days till Thanksgiving and 56 days till Christmas

My second pumpkin, that I carved yesterday, didn't turn out the way I wanted to either... No luck this year. Does anyone know where I could get good pumpkin carving tools here in Germany? I'll take some pictures later on when it's dark (again). We'll see what you think about them.

In today's

Challenge #11:

we keep on planning! This time it's our Christmas budget! For years now I wanted to plan a budget for Christmas and stick to it! How much do I want to spend for the presents, the tree, the decorations, the food, Christmas cards and stamps, wrapping supplies and events like a concert or a play? This keeps adding up...

Last year I found this great
worksheet at SimpleMom. I even filled it out and tried to stick to the amounts that I set for the presents. But you are really good, when you add up the amounts after Christmas, divide the sum through 12 and save that amount each month through the following year for the next Christmas! I hope that I (we) can do this for 2011!
A simple list will work, too. It's just that I love lists so much, that
simple lists don't work for me anymore... (go figure!)

The list, once it's filled out, will go right into our Holiday-Book. Also put a big envelope for all your Christmas related receipts in the book. So we can keep them all in one place!

Filling out this list is quite a task and - I think - has to be done together with your partner, so I'm gonna make it a
weekend-challenge!

Have fun!

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 10 / Holiday Countdown Day 10

Es muss also eine neue Lichterkette her!

Bianca

Only 3 days till Halloween, 28 (30) days till Thanksgiving and 57 days till Christmas

I only carved one pumpkin yesterday, and I don't really like what I did with the poor thing... Maybe today's try will be better!

How about this

Challenge #10:

Yesterday we thought about our Christmas decorations in general. Today I'd like us to think about our Christmas tree decorations! Do you already know what it's gonna look like this year?

And if you do and you already know what you still need for this kind of decoration - ornaments, tinsel, garlands, new lights - put it on your shopping-list! No more last-minute shopping for tree-candles for me!
For most of the people this will be an easy task, as their tree looks the same every year. But some folks are a little bit more adventurous...

like this seaside-inspired Christmas tree on Martha Stewart!

In the last few years we always had real candles on the tree. But this year, with our little one just walking, that's too dangerous for us. So we need new lights! Also we decided to decorate our tree "American style" this year with ornaments in all kinds of colors, candy canes and popcorn-garlands!
I like the ornaments by Kaethe Wohlfahrt

What will your tree look like? Do you always have the same decorations or do you like to try out new ones? Do you have any special ornaments that you love? Tell me about it!

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 9 / Holiday Countdown Day 9

Trotzdem weiß doch jede(r) so ungefähr, was man an Weihnachtsdekoration hat (und was man gerne hätte!).

Bianca

Only 4 days till Halloween, 29 (31) days till Thanksgiving and 58 days till Christmas

Have you already carved your pumpkin? That's one of the things I want to do today. I will post some pictures in the next few days.

Here is your

Challenge #9:

In many blogs that I like to read, people are already thinking about their Christmas
decorations! So today I'd like us to think about them, too!

If you are like me, your decorations are safely stored in the attic/the basement or somewhere else from where you just don't take them out "for a minute" to have a look at them! But (almost) everybody knows what's in those boxes and/or what kind of decorations you would like for this year!

Take a tour through your apartment or house and try to imagine where you want to put your favorite Christmas decorations!

And here is a question for you: Is there room? Or do you have to start cleaning those spots when decoration time has finally arrived?

If those places are cluttered take a basket or a bucket or whatever you like, set a timer for 2 minutes and take everything off those surfaces that doesn't belong there and put it in your basket! After that spend another 5 minutes of putting those things back where they belong.

You'll be surprised how much you can accomplish in those 7 minutes! Try it!

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 8 / Holiday Countdown Day 8

Bianca

Only 5 days till Halloween, 30 (32) days till Thanksgiving and 59 days till Christmas

Today I have a "personal" challenge for you.
My little one will get a vaccination today. And I found out that I really need a tetanus shot, too. I called my son's pediatrician to find out, if I - as a parent - can get my tetanus shot there. "No problem" was the answer - so I'll also get a vaccination today.

Here's your

Challenge #8:

Every year in December I have so many appointments that I don't really get to enjoy the Holiday Season. In order to not add any more appointments to that busy time of the year, think about
  • if you or your children have any medical check-ups coming up that still need to be done this year? Dentist, gynecologist, pediatrician, eye specialist, skin cancer screening, vaccinations?
  • if you could get your haircut already in November?
  • if your car needs service?
Can you think of anything else? Take your phone and get that appointment now! Let's try to make Christmas Time a time of peace and harmony!

Keks der Woche / Cookie of the Week: Peanut-Butter-Cookie

Bianca

I love peanut butter and I already posted here about it (post is in German only)! So it was only a matter of time before I bake my first peanut butter cookies...
I got this recipe from my mother-in-law (thanks a lot, by the way) and you need the following

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup soft butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter, crunchy
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon gingerbread spice
  • the grated zest of one orange
Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix all ingredients together and put little heaps on a baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes. Let rest on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Let cool completely.

I didn't have any crunchy peanutbutter in the house so I used the smooth one and added some chocolate chips instead! Yum...

Voilà:I admit they look a lot like the Chocolate Chip Cookies, but they taste completely different. The gingerbread spice and the orange zest make them a real special treat. Would be good as Christmas cookies, too!
Enjoy!

Bianca

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 7 / Holiday Countdown Day 7

  • Was habt Ihr noch da?
Falls ja: Was benötigt Ihr dafür?

Bianca

P.S.: Später gibt's auch wieder den Cookie of the Week!

Only 6 days till Halloween, 31 (33) days till Thanksgiving and 60 days till Christmas

Today we are going to do:

Challenge #7:

Get an overview what you still have of wrapping paper, ribbons and tags!
  • What do you still have? Is it enough for all your Christmas presents?
  • Do you have an idea how you want to wrap the presents this year? If you do: What do you still need for that?
  • Do you want to make some of the wrapping material yourself? Tags, wrapping paper?
Once you've put the things you still need on your shopping list, please gather everything and put it in one place, so you'll have it right at hand when you need it! I posted an idea of how you can do this here (but this post is only in German). Here's a picture of it:

If you have any other (better?) ideas, tell me and I'll show them here!

Bianca

P.S.: Later today I'll post the recipe for this week's Cookie of the Week!

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 6 / Holiday Countdown Day 6

Alles Liebe,

Bianca

Only 7 days till Halloween, 32 (34) days till Thanksgiving and 61 days till Christmas

Today I have something else to think about for you.
Which is

Challenge #6:
  • If you want a family picture with your Christmas mail, sit down together with the rest of your family and have a look at the calendar. Pick out one day (in the first half of November would be best) when you are going to have a photo shooting for that picture. Even a photo shooting at home has to be planned. You'll still need some time to include that picture in your cards.
  • In case you decided to write a family newsletter, now it's time to think about what you want to write. Maybe you can already write some notes?
  • If you don't want to do any of this, here is your challenge: Declutter (throw away in this case) 3 things! This could be old socks, underwear of which you always think:"Please don't let me have an accident while I'm wearing these!", broken toys or toys that are not complete anymore, something out of the "stuff-drawer", or a piece of knick-knack that you only notice while dusting and that you don't really like or even love!
I'm sure it's not hard to find 3 things like that! And don't we need room for our (Christmas-) decorations?

Have a nice Sunday,

Bianca

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 5 / Holiday Countdown Day 5

Aufgabe 5:

Bianca

Only 8 days till Halloween, 33 (35) days till Thanksgiving and 62 days till Christmas

Today's challenge will not be very time consuming. It's weekend and I want you to enjoy it! Even if the weather here is more than...

Let's get started with

Challenge #5:

If your choice fell on "real" Christmas cards yesterday, I would like you to think about this:
  • Do I still have cards from last year or the year before or even the year before that? If I do: Where are they? (now it's time to get up and search!)
  • In case I still need some new ones: Do I want to buy them or make them myself?
  • Do I want to include a family picture?
  • Do I want to write a newsletter and include it in my cards?
The last two questions are also for the people who decided to send their cards via email!!

That's it. Have a great weekend!

Bianca

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 4 / Holiday Countdown Day 4

Heute kommt kein Halloween dran.

Schau'n wir mal, was nun kommt:

Aufgabe 4:

- dann in unseren "Feiertags-Ordner"!

Bianca

Only 9 days till Halloween, 34 (36) days till Thanksgiving and 63 days till Christmas

No Halloween topic for today's post. I started to do some Halloween crafts (but not many) and I won't carve my pumpkin before the middle of next week, so it will still look good and fresh on the 31st!

Let's have a look at today's

Challenge #4:

It's a list! Yeah... I would like you to write down a list with all the names of people who will get a Christmas Card from you this year!
And while doing this, think about the following questions:
  • Do I want to send traditional cards by mail or cards by email? Or maybe both - depending on the people?
  • Do I already have all the home addresses or email addresses of these people (either in a real little address book or in my email program) - or do I still have to find out some of them?
You can certainly just take a plain ole writing pad or even a single piece of paper for this task - but if you are a little bit like me and you want a printable list, you'll find some here, here, here and here (I like this last one best, because it's already for 2010, 2011 and 2012!)! Once you've finished writing down the names, put your list in our "Holiday Book" and you're done for today!

By the way: If you can already come up with some ideas for Christmas presents: Write them down! And please, right behind the name of the concerning person on our first list!

Have fun - and see (read) you tomorrow!

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 3 / Holiday Countdown Day 3

Bianca

Only 10 days till Halloween, 35 (37) days till Thanksgiving and 64 days till Christmas

Yesterday's challenge was easy and I hope you were finished with it as fast as I was!
But Halloween is not only pumpkins. Anyone of you who is a real fan of Halloween also wants to show this in the decorations in his house or yard.
You can find great ideas for decorations on Martha Stewart's site.
Here some examples of the ones that I really like:

All images are taken from Martha Stewart's site. You'll find the links here, here, here and here! In case you are even planning a Halloween Party and you still need some ideas for delicous but creepy food, I am sure you'll find something here:
But now let's talk about

Challenge #3:

Today it's mainly the following questions:
  1. Do I already have one or two (or three...) pumpkins for carving and decorations?
  2. Do I want to make any other Halloween crafts and if I do want to, do I have everything I'll need for it in the house?
  3. Do I still need sweets for the kids that will eventually come by for trick-or-treating?
Everything that I still need to get, I will now write down immediately on my shopping list for my next (grocery) shopping trip! That's it! And remember: Always keep it fun!

Oh, something else: In case someone has great pictures of your own Jack'o Lanterns or other Halloween decorations, I'd be happy to show them here and to link them to your blog!

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 2 / Holiday Countdown Day 2

Aufgabe 2:

Vielleicht so ----->?

Only 11 days till Halloween, 36 (38) days till Thanksgiving and 65 days till Christmas

Has everybody done her/his list? I've done mine and was quite surprised how many people I put down on it! Seems like I will have a lot to do...
But for now let's start with

Challenge #2:

What are we going to do with our list now? We will put it in a folder or ring binder or whatever you find somewhere in your home!
This is going to be our "Holiday Book" from now on!
And why don't you put your list in a sheet protector before putting it in your folder? I like this neat look...

And since this is not going to take us 10 minutes - why not thinking about the looks of our Halloween pumpkin for this year?
Maybe like this ------>?
<----- or like that?

Unfortunately I don't have any digital photos of my other pumpkins...

If you need some inspiration stop by at the Pumpkin Lady. You'll find great templates there, and even some free ones! (Thanks Ela for this link!)

Have fun with this challenge!

Feiertags-Countdown Tag 1 / Holiday Countdown Day 1

Only 12 days till Halloween, 37 (39) days till Thanksgiving and 66 days till Christmas!

Today I will start my personal Holiday Countdown!

Every year Christmas suddenly appears out of nowhere! You know what I mean?
Last year already in October I joined Flylady's "Cruising through the Holidays" to make Christmas time less stressful.

The plan is/was to be
prepared for Christmas by December 1st! So you can relax and just enjoy the holiday season! Well, I didn't quite make it till December 1st, but it was definitely less stressful than the years before...

But before Christmas there is Halloween! Personally I don't like to dress up in fancy costumes, but I like it when the kids stop by for "trick or treat"! So I always have sweets at hand at Halloween and I try to make our house look "Halloween-friendly" from the outside.
I do love pumpkin carving! It's one of my favorite things in October. I already have some ideas for this year, but this will be subject to a separate post...

Thanksgiving will be part of my countdown this year, too as I have put a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on my "37-things-list". Since the official Thanksgiving Day is a Thursday and therefore a normal working day here in Germany, my personal countdown is 2 days longer: until Saturday, November 27th. I will invite some guests for this day - I'm already excited!

And Christmas definitely has to be well planned and well in advance!
To get all this planning done in time, I decided to put one little challenge in this blog every morning! If I say LITTLE, I mean LITTLE! Something that can be done in about 10 minutes max.. If there is someone out there you wants to join me with my little challenges, I'd love you to tell me! I'm sure this can be a lot of fun!

And here it comes: the 1st Challenge:

Make yourself a yummy cup of tea/coffee/hot cocoa, take your cup, a pen and a piece of paper, sit down for a few minutes and make a list of all the people who will get a Christmas present from you this year (even if it's just a little something like cookies...)!
Just the list with the names - nothing else! If you want a printable list for this, you'll find a good one here.
This can be done, don't you think?

Have fun!

Keks der Woche / Cookie of the Week: Chili-Chocolate-Cookies

So!

(Hihi)

Bianca

I just finished my weekly cookie-baking for you!
As every year I was looking forward to the November issue of the German magazine Brigitte, because of its great Christmas cookie recipes! And as every year I wasn't disappointed.
Most of the recipes are very Christmasy, but some recipes are also for all year round baking!
Like these fantastic Chili-Chocolate-Cookies!
I can tell you: They are sooooo yummy!

And here is the recipe:

Ingredients:
  • 400 g flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 40 g cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons chili flakes (or chili powder)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 320 g soft butter
  • 220 g sugar
Actually you are supposed to mix all the dry ingredients, and in a separate bowl the sugar and the butter. Then mix it slowly together. But I'm so impatient that I just poured everything together and mixed it with my hands. It always works and is so much faster! After that cover the dough and put it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F. Roll little balls the size of a hazelnut and put them on a baking tray. Bake for 10 minutes and then take out of the oven and let cool completely on a wire rack. The recipe tells me to put some sifted cocoa over the cookies, but I like them better without!

This recipe is for approx. 90 cookies. Since this was too much for me at the moment I froze half of the dough and will use it later during Christmas time! I love these cookies! The chocolate and the heat of the chilis are a great combination and make these cookies a real special treat!
I hope you'll like them, too!

Buch-Tipp: Ich sehe was... / Book Review: I spy...

Bianca

A few days ago, while going through the books in the Big one's book shelf, I found this book:

I bought this for my son already several years ago, but every year around Halloween we take it out of the shelf and read it - or better look at it! It's a fun book for children and grown-ups!
It's a book of picture riddles - in this case spooky picture riddles. The photos are absolutely marvellous!
Have a look at this example:

Can you find the scissors, the key, the rabbit, the 2 bowling pins and the 3 pumpkins?
If you click on the picture it will enlarge...

Some things are easy to spot - instant success for the little ones - and some require a second or third look!
There are a few more I spy-books, e.g. about a "Treasure Hunt", "Year-Round Challenger", "Gold Challenger" or "School Days".
I already gave several of these books as presents, and since Christmas is approaching fast now, I'd like to recommend the I spy-books warmly to you!
