Two weeks ago I told you about my morning routine. Today I thought I could continue with my afternoon routine.
My afternoon sometimes starts before lunch; on other days it's not before 4 p.m. It always depends on when we actually have lunch and what other things are planned for that day.
Usually my afternoon routine looks like this:
- Hang up the laundry that I did in the morning or put it in the dryer
- Iron dry laundry or/and fold it and put it away
- Clean up in the kitchen after lunch
- Help my big one with homework or at least have a look at it
- Work 10 minutes in the current Zone*
- Pick up one HotSpot** for 2 minutes
But I think I have to explain the two terms that I marked with a *. I already told you about the Flylady who helps everybody who wants help on her website with housework and getting organized for free! Some of her ideas and concepts are simply brilliant and have been adapted by me willingly.
One is the concept of Zones: The house or the apartment is divided into 5 different zones.
- The Entrance or Hallway, Front Porch and Dining Room (which we don't have)
- The Kitchen
- The Bathroom and One Extra Room (here it's the 2 kids' rooms)
- The Bedroom
- The Living Room
The second idea is the one of HotSpots: "A hot spot is an area, when left unattended will gradually take over." Like the table in the hallway that attracts all the keys, the junk mail etc. Or the coffee table in the living room with all the newspapers, magazines, remote controls and so on. You get the picture!
Every afternoon I pick one of our HotSpots and declutter for 2 minutes. But only 2 minutes (I set a timer!)! This way I don't get overwhelmed and sometimes even feel like doing another 2 minutes later on.
How do you do it? Do you have Zones and HotSpots, too?
Bianca
